See? There it is.

The very same tree in which you carved our initials all those years ago.

You can still see them if you know where to look, which of course I do.

At the time, I thought it was a silly thing to do, kid stuff.

But now I am glad you didn’t listen to me.

You said we’d be together forever; for as long as this tree was standing.

I thank God every day for this tree — proof that

you and I really happened; that we were

A Thing.

It’s all that’s left.

  1. I have been disappointed when initials I carved did not stand the test of growth, damage, bark, and ultimately the death of a special tree even though I knew where to look. Fortunately, the sentiment they represented 53 years ago did survive
