It’s time for Song Lyric Sunday again! This week, Jim Adams has tasked us with the prompts Brain/Mind/Think. So, I’ve chosen Lose My Mind, by Brett Eldredge.

Lyrics

[Verse 1]
You put me on a roller coaster, fly me on a plane
You send me to another planet, get inside my brain
I knew right when I met you, I would never be the same
But I let you take me over, girl, so I’m the one to blame

[Chorus]
You make all my screws come loose
Got me perfectly confused
Always find a way to mess me up and drive me wild
I love the way you make me lose my mind
Lose my mind

[Verse 2]
You make me crazy and I kinda like it
You show that apple, girl, and I wanna bite it
So crazy that I gotta have it
And I never wanna get outta this straight jacket

[Chorus]
You make all my screws come loose
Got me perfectly confused
Always find a way to mess me up and drive me wild
I love the way you make me lose my mind
Lose my mind

The Story

  • Eldredge wrote the song with Ross Copperman and Heather Morgan. “The day we wrote ‘Lose My Mind,’ I had this groove in my head that kept me awake the night before,” he recalled. “This groove was driving me nuts. And a relationship can be like that too, when a person completely takes control of your thoughts, and you can’t do anything but think about them. It drives you completely crazy and makes you lose your mind.”
  • The song’s music video features Brett Eldredge as an in-patient at a mental asylum. His beautiful nurse that is driving him even crazier is played by Victoria’s Secret model Rachel Hilbert. “I’m a very high-strung guy, and I feel like I’m probably going crazy a lot of the time,” Eldredge told People. “I just wanted to make a fun video, portraying the way a girl kinda makes you lose your mind and completely wraps all of your thoughts around her.”

Eldredge came up with the video’s concept whilst sitting on a plane. “I literally started typing up how I thought it would be to do it, and here I am,” he said. “You make it up and dream it and imagine it, and then you try to make it come true somehow.”
  • The song borrows the “you make me crazy” line from Gnarls Barkley’s “Crazy” in its second verse. Eldredge and his two co-writers appropriately gave songwriting credit to the Gnarls Barkley duo, Cee Lo Green and Danger Mouse. “I think it’s pretty cool to be a co-writer with Cee Lo,” Copperman told Billboard magazine. “I was saying we better at least get a Cee Lo co-write out of the deal.”
