Aside from being my favorite Crayola color as a child, periwinkle functions as an emotion descriptor as well. The difference between feeling blue and feeling periwinkle is difficult to explain, but when you know it when you feel it — kind of like pornography — you know it when you see it.
Blue as defined above, can mean depression or melancholy. Periwinkle in contrast, can be defined as displaced angst.
Periwinkle happens when one’s cheerfulness encompasses a vague mist of loss. It’s seemingly impossible to put one’s finger on what exactly has been lost or gone missing, but there is a hint of the ominous involved. It is as if you know your joy will be short-lived or is perhaps even undeserved, and no one knows the reason but you.
Sometimes, even you may think you don’t know why you feel periwinkle, but on some level, you do. You know you do. You’re just afraid to delve that deep into your psyche and claim it.
Lies, guilt, and secrets play a huge role in the deep-rooted periwinkle emotion. That ever-looming fear of being found-out at any given moment can play hell with a person. The constant apprehension is maddening whether you are aware of the reason for your periwinkle-ness.
So, what does one do when periwinkle-ness sets in? Here are some suggestions:
1. Take a nap.
2. Consume one or more of the adult beverages of your choice.
3. Write about it.

“kind of like pornography — you know it when you see it.” Never thought I would agree to this line. But I do.
Nice writing pal! 🙂

Well, you had me hooked on the title, but now that I don’t see any Porn, I’m feeling a little Periwinkle, guess I’ll take a nap.
