Today’s word prompt at The Daily Post is copycat.

During my teenage years, and even for a while after, I idolized my best friend. Let’s call her Sandi. She was tall, thin, and gorgeous. Girls at school called her Barbie; she was that ‘perfect.’

I wanted to be just like her. I emulated her walk, her half-lisp, her style, posture and mannerisms. I ate the same foods, drank the same drinks, bought the same record albums in hopes some of Sandi’s perfection would rub off.

It didn’t work, obviously. I was destined to be nothing more than good ol’ Midge, to Sandi’s Barbie.

As time passed I realized that in trying to be Sandi, Susan had gotten lost. I didn’t know who I was or what I liked, for sure. Eventually, I figured it out.

Now, I’m glad none of the Sandi-ness rubbed off.

Things turned out okay for Midge.

Better than okay.

Perfection at its Best

Tell it like it is
